I'm definitely not the daily blogger. My dialogue is mostly internal, anyway. I think that's part of being an artist. We aren't real verbal. More of observers. Introspective I would say. Anyhow... I went to Vegas again. Tried to see if roulette would pay off better, but no. I'm not meant to win at the tables. Black Jack was fun, but still didn't do that well. Had a good time anyway. That's all that matters.
Before we left we saw a show at The Torrance Art Museum. It was quite nice, especially liked the small works by Carol Es.
I've been doing my best lately to try and get out to see shows around here. Luckily for me the LA area has a lot of galleries that are grouped in certain areas or complexes. This last week I went to Culver City and walked around Washington Bl. to see what they had going on. They had a nice group show at BLK/MRKT gallery and some interesting, somewhat macabre photos at Corey Helford. A couple days later I went to Bergamot Station in Santa Monica. They had a few interesting shows. Patricia Correia had a couple of different shows going on in her galleries. A nice juxtaposition of artists/styles represented. Shoshana Wayne had some interesting installations. I tend to like paintings more than installations usually. But these were pretty interesting. Not the typical weak conceptual crap you usually find around.
Chinese Food...mmmm. Lately I've been reading a blog called Chowhound. I like different kinds of food. The more far out ,the better, same with my wife. She being of the Chinese persuasion Knows of some good regional specialties. Well Chowhound is great. Its like mapquest for food. You just find your region enter your search terms and whammo.. reviews and restaurants to go to. My tip if you live in LA, the best Chinese places are in Alhambra/San Gabriel/ Rosemead area. Sorry I'm too tired now to figure out how to link you with the site. Chowhound ...google it ,you'll be glad you did.

Turtle Cloud Painting

My newest painting. Hope this year is better for everyone and better for the world in general. I feel there is some hope as long as our elected representatives take some initiative to make changes that benefit us all. I could get on a soapbox about a lot of things that bug me but it would become pretty political and this is an art blog.
Getting back to art, I went to the Magritte show this weekend at the LA county museum of art. It was quite different from most shows in that they had John Baldessari make the show part of an installation in a way. The ceiling is covered with images of the freeways and the carpet has images of clouds upon it. Its kind of topsy turvey in that Magrittish way. They also placed conceptual artists works adjacent to the Magrittes in an effort to show how he influenced the work of conceptual artists. I didn't listen to the tape so I'm not sure just how much the conceptual artists work was influenced by Magritte. I always thought they were more influenced by Duchamp. The thing I noticed most is that they were artists who either used text with image, had cigars or pipes in images, or referred to a Magritte in some way. One interesting series that Magritte did in the 40's were his so-called "Bad Paintings". These were a series of works that were leaned toward a more abstracted figurative style. They were purposely painted "badly" using "bad colors". I actually liked a lot of these more than some of his "well painted pieces ". I think that it was probably liberating for him to paint that way after painting so tight for so long. You could see in some of the paintings that they were done almost mechanically, like a bad trompe L'oeil. Like the joy had been sucked out of it. Unfortunately the public's response to his new style was less than warm and he went back to his old style. Too bad for him, its almost like some TV stars that leave such an impression as a certain character that they end up being typecast and can never play anyone else. Poor Magritte.
Sometimes I worry about that kind of freedom being lost. Right now I can paint whatever the heck I want when I want. I'm not officially represented by any gallery, and no one expects a certain type of work from me.( Although I would like to have representation and an adoring public that eagerly awaited my masterpieces, don't get me wrong here.) I enjoy a certain amount of freedom that some artists may never enjoy again if there whole being is wrapped up in a certain type of iconic image. I think that Gerhard Richter is one of the few living artists who can get away with changing his style and imagery, without compromising his audience. although Matisse, Picasso, Dali, Cezanne, and Pollock all changed styles over the years.
What I'm doing now with my work is trying to create a certain amount of flexibility within the work so that it can retain a certain amount of integrity and cohesiveness, and be fun to work with at the same time. I don't want to lose my freedom , but I want my audience to relate to the series as well.
Here is my latest painting, "Birds of a Feather" acrylic on canvas. 24"x24" by Kenneth Inlow 2007

New painting

This is my latest painting. I seem to have run out of energy between my day job my artwork, and just living in general. I kind of needed to take a little break from the internet for a while. Sadly, my favorite forum, Artdorks has reached it's demise. RIP Artdorks. I enjoyed the banter there, maybe a little too much.
Anyway, I did go to Vegas a while back. Stayed at Treasure Island Casino. TI is verry nice. They upgraded us to a strip view room. Which was the nicest I have ever stayed at in Vegas. This time we played Roulette rather than slots. I have to say that I really enjoy it more. The slots just eat up your money fast now. It seems like you can't even get a small jackpot anymore. I can hardly wait to go back. I love Vegas. Just wish the rooms were cheaper on the strip.
Very soon I will update with some pictures of a couple new paintings I have been working on. They had an opening for some artists at The Copro Nason Gallery that I was curious about. Chet Zar, Kathie Olivas, and Naoto Hattori. Chet Zar's work was very well executed, albeit quite dark-not for the faint of heart . It had something to with the de-evolution of the church. How its become the promoter of death rather than life. Of hate rather than redemption. Chet's family is from San Pedro, originally, I believe. I didn't get a chance to meet him but I'm curious if he's related to Jack Zar. Jack used to play guitar during our lunch breaks at San Pedro High sometimes. He was an amazing guitarist for a high school kid. He could play Hendrix , Zeppelin , anything almost. Seems that talent runs in the family. Kathie Olivas paintings were interesting. Cute, with a sinister edge. Naoto Hattori's paintings were very interesting as well. Kind of like a mixture of H.R. Giger, Breughel, Bosch and a Medievel miniaturist.

Rauschenberg exhibit.

Last week my wife and I went to MOCA to see the Rauschenberg exhibit. The combines are quite spectacular. They are beautifully composed and quite sophisticated. I only wish there weren't so many in this exhibition. They really need room to breathe. These are works that gradually unfold on many levels, you really have to back way up from them to truly appreciate the subtle compositional details of these works. Rauschenberg really is the master of creating something eloquent from scraps of detritus. If you go to the exhibit definitely get the book. You almost "see" the works better in reproduction.
Museum of Contemporary Art 250 S. Grand Ave. Downtown L.A.
